Why Do Supercar Headlights Flash?

If you’ve ever seen a high-end sports car driving through town at night, you might have noticed something strange: Its headlights often seem to flash without being turned on or off. But what’s going on?

The answer has to do with the headlight systems in modern cars — specifically the adaptive headlights that are prevalent in luxury vehicles. These headlight systems use cameras, sensors, and computers to control the brightness and direction of lights based on feedback from the road around them.

When a driver approaches another vehicle at night, their adaptive headlights will dim so as not to blind the other driver. This can be done by turning off one of the headlights temporarily, or by dimming a single bulb within each headlight. When an adaptive headlight system dims a bulb, it can appear as if the entire headlight is flashing on and off even though it hasn’t actually been turned off.

Is Flashing While Driving Illegal?

There’s no state law against flashing your lights. It’s considered freedom of speech. And, there’s no way to tell if a driver is flashing his headlights to warn you about a speed trap or because he thinks the woman in the car next to him is hot. Is It Illegal To Flash Your Headlights To Give Way?

The short answer is, no. In fact, you may even be able to use it as an excuse to get out of a ticket.

A driver flashing their headlights to let others know that there is a speed trap ahead or to give way to another driver is not illegal, according to the Department of Transport (DofT). This is because headlight flashing falls under the category of ‘a non-compulsory signal given by drivers’.

If you see a vehicle approaching with their headlights on high beam, you may flash your lights to indicate that they should switch them off. This is a common courtesy, but it’s debatable whether it should be done.

The Highway Code states that “You MUST NOT use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.” The keyword there is ‘dazzle’ – if you flash your main beam headlights at another driver at close range, it will most certainly dazzle them, even if their lights are on a high beam.

Flashing a driver who has their lights on low beam is also technically illegal, although it’s unlikely to dazzle them. The Highway Code notes that “Dipped headlights MUST be used at night on lit roads and when visibility is seriously reduced during the day.” So if you flash another driver who has their dipped beams on, you’re telling them to switch from dipped to full beam, which is against the rules.

It’s called the ‘flicker effect’ and it’s very common in supercars. The reason why is because of the high revving engines and the speed at which they operate. The shutter speed in the camera has to be slow enough to capture everything yet fast enough to prevent any blur from the car moving too fast to be captured by the slow shutter speed.

The flicker effect happens because of this, when you have such a fast engine and a slow shutter speed, you get multiple images of the headlights reflecting off their environment. This is because, at an rpm of 10,000+, their engines are cycling so fast that the shutter cannot capture all of them in one single frame, so it captures images as they go by and when you watch back the video, it looks as if they are flashing.
